How to summarize a PDF with AI and check the result
A useful summary helps you find the key points and return to the page that explains them. This workflow helps uncover errors hidden behind a convincing answer.
01 Before uploading the document
Check that you may share the file with your chosen service. Practice with a public document or one you created. For third-party or confidential information, review your account terms before sending it. Extracting pages does not necessarily remove sensitive information.
02 Prepare a PDF you can verify
Open the original and try selecting a sentence. If it consists of photos or scans, check whether the service supports that material; it may need optical character recognition (OCR). Keep the original and note differences between printed page numbers and the viewer’s page count.
03 Choose a service that lets you return to sources
Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, is an option for working with document sources. Check its help for supported formats. Create a notebook and add the PDF using your account’s interface. Reading its documentation is not an accuracy test with your file; use available references to verify answers.
04 Give the summary a specific purpose
Explain who will read it and what they need. Meeting preparation needs decisions, deadlines and open questions; studying calls for concepts and relationships. Ask it to separate document statements from interpretations and provide available references.
A request you can adapt
Summarize this PDF for a meeting. Separate key ideas, decisions, deadlines and open questions. For each point, provide a reference or page if available. Do not fill in missing information: write “not stated”. Separate source facts from interpretations. Finish with sections I should review in the original.
05 Check three things in the original
Verify figures, dates and units; then exceptions and conditions; finally a section you know that the summary may have missed. An existing reference does not prove it supports the whole claim. Treat anything absent from the source as unconfirmed.
06 Keep the summary and its limitations together
Record the document title and version, consultation date and pages you checked. If the source changes, verify again. A summary helps with reading but does not replace the original when accuracy matters.
A verification example
Fictional example: the document says “delivery within 30 days, except special orders”. A summary saying only “delivery within 30 days” has lost an important condition. Return to the full paragraph and add the exception before sharing.
Can I summarize only a few pages?
Yes: prepare a copy of the relevant pages if the service supports it. Include necessary notes and definitions; removing context can change the meaning.
