How to reduce an image to 200 KB or another limit
- Add a still JPG, PNG or WebP image. Enter the maximum size and the unit required by your form.
- Choose the minimum encoder quality and whether pixel dimensions may be reduced. Disable resizing if you need the original resolution.
- Select Fit to limit, review the final bytes and dimensions, and download if the result meets your needs.
KB and KiB: check what your form requires
200 KB is 200,000 bytes; 200 KiB is 204,800 bytes. The tool compares the exact file size with your chosen maximum, including the limit itself. A 203,000-byte file fits within 200 KiB but exceeds 200 KB. If a form only says KB without defining it, the 1,000-byte option is the more conservative choice.
What changes and what is preserved
The tool tries JPG compression settings. If they are not enough and resizing is allowed, it reduces pixel dimensions while keeping the aspect ratio, down to your chosen minimum. The search is bounded and does not guarantee optimal compression. Smaller images may lose legibility. If the limit cannot be reached, no download is presented as compliant: you can relax the settings and try again.
A JPG that already fits is kept without re-encoding, including its metadata. New conversions do not copy the original metadata. PNG and WebP are converted to JPG with a white background; detail may be lost and colours may change. Animated WebP and PNG images are rejected.
Privacy and limits
Processing runs on your device without uploading files. Up to 20 MiB of input and 24 megapixels; one image at a time. Closing or reloading the page clears the selection. Use smaller files on devices with limited memory.
Meeting the file size limit does not guarantee acceptance by a form: it may also require particular dimensions, format, background, content or a strictly lower file size. Check its instructions and review the downloaded JPG.
BEFORE YOU GET STARTED
Your questions, answered.
How can I reduce a photo to 100, 200 or 500 KB?
Enter the required maximum in Maximum file size and keep KB unless your form specifies otherwise. Select Fit to limit and check bytes, dimensions and legibility. The result may be smaller than the maximum; no padding bytes are added.
Can I reduce file size without changing width and height?
Clear Allow smaller pixel dimensions. The tool will try JPG compression while keeping the output dimensions, but your limit and minimum quality may not be achievable. The tool reports this instead of promising that every image can fit every limit.
Why does a form reject my photo even though it is below 200 KB?
File size may be only one requirement. Check format, dimensions, background and content, and whether the form requires strictly less than 200 KB. This tool outputs JPG and distinguishes KB from KiB; follow the form instructions.
